"Enchantment" Story
Hsi-Shih was one of the Four Great Beauties of China. She lived around the middle of 400 BC. At that time, China was divided into spheres of influence controlled by minor kings and warlords. The king of Wu had just annexed the kingdom of Yueh, and the king of Yueh was held hostage for three years. When he returned to his own kingdom, he vowed to bring about the demise of the king of Wu. Fan Li was the prime minister of Yueh. One day, as he was strolling along the river, he saw a beautiful girl washing silk on the banks. He recruited her, groomed her for several years in song, dance and the art of seduction. When he felt she was ready, he presented her to the king of Wu as a peace offering. The mighty tyrant took one look at Hsi-Shih and promptly fell head over heels in love with her. He told her all the state secrets, which she relayed to Fan Li, and in the end, this enabled the king of Yueh to defeat his enemy.
