"Courage and Devotion" Story
Hua Mu-Lan was the beautiful daughter of a Chinese general. He had no sons, so he taught Mu-Lan all he knew about martial arts and warfare strategies. When the Emperor called upon the general to lead the troops into battle, he was unable to go because of failing health. Being the devoted and dutiful daughter that she was, Mu-Lan disguised herself as a man and took her father’s place on the battlefield. She won all of the battles, and was awarded the rank of general.
While the war raged on, she fell in love with a fellow officer. He had no idea she was a woman. After the war was over, he came to visit his “comrade in arms”, and she revealed her true identity to him. Her goodness and beauty were irresistible and he fell in love with her. They were married and lived to a ripe, old age.
