"Weaver of Destiny" Story

The Weaving Maiden was the youngest of seven daughters of the Queen of Heaven.  She wove the most beautiful silks from which the gods and goddesses made their clothing.  One day, her sisters lured her down to earth for some fun and games.  There she met the handsome cowherd, and they fell in love.  She decided to stay on earth to be with her beloved.

Sometime later, her mother realized no-one was doing the weaving.  Hunting high and low for her wayward daughter, she discovered her with the cowherd, and forced her to return to her loom in heaven.  When the young man tried to follow, the Queen waved her golden comb across the sky, forming the Milky Way that separated the two lovers.

However, the Weaving Maiden grieved so much for her cowherd that her father, the King, finally took pity on her and decreed that once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month of the Chinese calendar, they would meet.  So every year on that day, the magpies would fly down from heaven and form a bridge across the Milky Way, and the lovers would walk across the backs of the magpies and meet.  And those of us on earth would see this bridge as a rainbow.
