"Pandas of Wolong"
© Caroline Young, All Rights Reserved

This beautiful 18 inch wide by 24 inch tall poster celebrates the legend of how Pandas received their black markings.
Long time ago, pandas were pure white without their distinctive markings.  In the Wolong Valley was a shepherdess that used to watch her flock during the day.  A young panda came daily to play with the sheep, perhaps mistaking one of them for his own.  One day, a leopard attacked the panda cub.  The girl picked up a stick to beat the cat off the cub.  The cub escaped, but the girl was killed.
At her funeral, the pandas came to mourn her.  They spread ashes on their limbs, as was the custom. They hugged each other, they rubbed their eyes as they cried, and when the weeping became too loud, they covered their ears.  And everywhere they touched themselves turned black permanently, giving them their signature black and white color.

This beautiful 18 inch wide by 24 inch tall poster celebrates the Chinese year of the Dragon.  It depicts the story of the rare Water Dragon which only comes along every 60 years.
In Chinese legend, fish swimming up the Yellow River must encounter a series of rapids, called the "Dragon Gate".  Those that get through are transformed into immortal dragons and live in eternal happiness.  The only fish said to be able to achieve this extraordinary feat is the carp, or koi.  Therefore, the koi fish symbolizes courage, strength and perseverance.  The dragon is a symbol of great power and good fortune.

24 inches wide by 36 inches tall

During the reign of Chien-Lung, Emperor of the Ching Dynasty in China, there were frequent battles over border disputes with Mongolia.  During one of these battles, the King of Mongolia was killed.  Chien-Lung, Emperor of China, saw the rare beauty of the Queen of Mongolia and fell in love with her.  He kidnapped her, and brought her back to Beijing to become his concubine.
Chien-Lung tried to buy her love.  He had a pure white pagoda built just to see her smile.  He showered her with the most exquisite silks and jewels, but to her dying day, she never relinquished her love for her dead husband.
The five-toed dragon in her robes symbolizes her love, the King of Mongolia, the  phoenix symbolizes the Queen, so that even though they are separated by death, spiritually they will always be one.  The wedding knot in the horses tail symbolizes the bond that will never be broken.
