Khulan was the daughter of Dayir Usan, the Merkit leader who surrendered to Temujin (Genghis Khan) in the winter of 1203-1204. Her father gave her to the conqueror as a peace offering. She was very beautiful, and Temujin loved her dearly. She was second in importance only to Borte, Temujin's first wife and Grand Empress of Mongolia. Khulan was the wife who accompanied him on his military campaigns. Later, Dayir Usan retracted his surrender. He and his subjects were eventually subdued, his possessions plundered, and he himself killed.
